Obesity increases the likelihood of developing typical types of diabetes, type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is the main reason for end-stage renal disease and visual impairment, not the terrible minimum distance (diabetic neuropathy) of working-age adults. Individuals who suffer from diabetes several times face cardiovascular complications and stroke.

Weight loss is considered a central therapeutic goal in the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes, as the majority of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese. For people with advanced prediabetes, diabetes prevention studies have shown that an intensive diet and exercise program reduced the overall risk of diabetes by 58%.
