Obesity increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, especially cardiovascular disease and coronary artery disease (CHD). The system by which obesity increases the risk of cardiovascular infections refers to changes in body tissues that can affect hemodynamics and alter the structure of the heart. Support for provocative cytokines released by adipose tissue can cause cardiovascular disorders and promote plaque formation in atherosclerosis.

Obesity is directly involved in cardiovascular risk factors such as dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep disorders. Obesity also leads to the development of cardiovascular disease and death from cardiovascular disease, regardless of other cardiovascular risk factors. More recent data highlight abdominal obesity as determined by waist circumference as a risk marker for cardiovascular disease independent of the classification of obesity index.
