Thyroid dysfunction is associated with changes in body weight and composition, body temperature, and total energy expenditure and resting energy expenditure, regardless of physical activity. In addition, weight gain often occurs after treatment for hypothyroidism. Both asymptomatic hypothyroidism and overt hypothyroidism are often associated with weight gain, decreased fever development, and metabolic rate. In a recent cross-sectional population-based study of 27,097 people aged 40 years and older with a body mass index (BMI) of 30.0 kg / m2 or higher, asymptomatic and overt hypothyroidism increased BMI and obesity.

This link has gained relevance against the backdrop of an unprecedented rise in the prevalence of obesity around the world. Obesity is commonly found in patients as a result of hypothyroidism. New research suggests the changes in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) may be secondary to obesity. This article reviews the fascinating relationship between obesity and hypothyroidism and the clinical implications that result.
